INDIANAPOLIS (ICIS)--Brazilian ethanol production will total 65.3bn litres in the 2020-2021 crop year, more than twice the 27.5bn litres produced in 2008-2009, a government official said on Tuesday.

The official did not provide a production figure for the 2010-2011 crop, but output last year was flat with 2008-2009 based on data from Brazilian sugarcane industry association Unica.

Unica put centre-south ethanol production in 2010-2011 at 25.4bn litres. The area accounts for 90% of Brazil’s ethanol production.

Brazil has close to 500 sugarcane mills, which employ some 845,000 workers, said Stephanie Bergeman, a trade officer with the Brazilian consulate in Chicago.

On the export side, Brazil will have some 15.7bn litres of surplus ethanol supply that could be exported in 2020-2021, Bergeman said during a presentation at the International Fuel Ethanol Workshop (FEW) in Indianapolis.

Brazil expects to ship some of that ethanol to the US, which will need 15bn gal (57bn litres) of advanced biofuel in 2020 to meet a mandate set by the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).

Under RFS rules, sugarcane-based ethanol, the type of ethanol produced in Brazil, qualifies as an advanced biofuel.

The 2011 International Fuel Ethanol Workshop  conference opened on Monday. The four-day workshop has drawn 2,000 delegates.
