Brazil's Petrobras to use natgas as petchem feedstock at Comperj

SAO PAULO (ICIS)--Brazil-based Petrobras will produce basic petrochemicals at Comperj using pre-salt natural gas as feedstock instead of naphtha, the company said on Thursday.
According to Petrobras, the change in feedstock will help the company save up to 30% in construction costs for the complex.
The Complexo Petroquimico do Rio de Janeiro (Comperj) will have a production capacity of 1.1m tonnes of ethylene/year for the production of petrochemicals and use 15m cubic meters of natural gas/day, the company said.
The petrochemical phase is expected to start production by the end of 2016, according to Petrobras.
Comperj’s 165,000 bbl/day refinery is under construction and Petrobras plans to build a second refinery of the same size.
The capacities of the polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), styrene and monoethylene glycol (MEG) units have not yet been determined, according to the company.
