Arkema to shut DOP/PA units in France for maintenance in August

LONDON (ICIS)--Arkema’s dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and phthalic anhydride (PA) facilities, in Chauny, France, are to undergo a two-to-three week maintenance shutdown in August, a company source said on Friday.

The DOP unit has a nameplate capacity of 70,000 tonnes while the PA unit has a nameplate capacity of 30,000 tonnes.

Supply will not be affected during the turnaround because weak demand, partly due to the summer holiday season, has allowed Arkema to build inventories in advance.

Demand for DOP is particularly low as this plasticiser has long suffered a gradual shift of demand to alternative plasticisers such as di-isononyl phthalate (DINP), di-propyl heptyl phthalate (DPHP) and Tri Octyl Trimellitate (TOTM).

Other PA producers in Europe include Polynt, Atmosa and Proviron. Other DOP producers in Europe include Perstorp, ZAK, Polynt and Oltchim.
