US May acrylic acid imports drop by 74% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US imports of acrylic acid fell sharply in May to 3,095 tonnes, a decrease of 74% from 11,696 tonnes during the same month of 2010, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Tuesday.

The intense supply constraints of a year ago had eased considerably by spring 2011 amid softer-than-expected demand for coatings and adhesives from the US construction market, sources said.

Malaysia was the primary source for acrylic acid imports in May, shipping 2,042 tonnes, or 66% of total imports for the period.

Exports rose to 3,366 tonnes in May, increasing by 39% over May 2010.

Belgium and Brazil were the top export destinations, taking 1,500 tonnes and 1,303 tonnes, respectively, or 83% of the month’s overseas shipments.

US prices for acrylic acid were $1.50-1.55/lb ($3,307-3,417/tonne, €2,348-2,426/tonne), as assessed by ICIS.

US acrylic acid suppliers include Dow Chemical, BASF, Sasol and Arkema Emulsion Systems.
