South Korea’s Kumho Mitsui to expand MDI capacity by 2012

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s Kumho Mitsui Chemicals (KMCI) plans to increase the production of its methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) plants by around 33%, or one-third of their current capacity, a company source said on Wednesday.

The company currently has two MDI units with a combined nameplate capacity of about 150,000 tonnes/year at Yeosu.

With the expansion, KMCI plans to ramp up its annual MDI output to 200,000 tonnes/year by the end of 2012, the source said. 

No further information is available yet as company officials are still discussing details such as the production schedule and the amount in the fiscal budget to be allocated, he added.

KMCI is a joint venture between Japan’s Mitsui Chemical and South Korea’s Kumho Petrochemical.
