US Huntsman expanding to meet demand for lithium-ion batteries

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US Huntsman will expand its carbonate electrolyte solvents business to meet the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries, the company said on Monday.

“High-quality ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate, used as electrolyte solvents, are critical to the reliable operation and long working life of lithium-ion batteries,” the company said. “Huntsman is a world leader and innovator in high-purity cyclic carbonates."

The company's plans include expanding its Conroe, Texas, plant, as well as building a new plant in North America.

Huntsman did not provide details on the expansion of the Conroe plant, which has an annual capacity of 36,000 tonnes of carbonates, or where the new plant would be built.
