SHANGHAI (ICIS)--China’s Changjiang Gas Chemical plans to build a 650,000 tonne/year natural gas based propylene facility at Nantong in Jiangsu province, a source close to the company said on Tuesday.

The project obtained approval from the authorities last week, the source said.

Construction of the plant will begin in the late third quarter or early fourth quarter, the source said.

“The propane separated from imported natural gas will be used [as feedstock] for the new propylene project,” the source said in Mandarin.

Besides the propylene facility, the company also plans to build a 660,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant at the same site.

The propylene produced at the upcoming facility will be used to feed the PP plant, which is undergoing feasibility studies and expected to come on stream in two to three years.
