SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Jiangsu Sopo shut its 1m tonne/year Zhenjiang acetic acid plant in Jiangsu province on 21 July following the outage of its upstream 500,000 tonne/year methanol plant on the same day, a company official said on Friday.

This is the third time in three months that operations have been disrupted at both plants, which had been restarted about two weeks ago after an earlier unplanned outage.

“Production at the methanol plant tripped yesterday which [disrupted operations at] the acetic acid plant as well,” the official said. “Production at the plants is expected to be resumed within the next two days.”

The latest outage is expected to be brief and is not expected to have any significant impact on the acetic acid market, sources said.

Besides the methanol and the acetic acid plants, Jiangsu Sopo also operates a 500,000 tonne/year ethyl acetate plant at the same site.

The ethyl acetate plant is operating normally as there is ample acetic acid feedstock inventory, the official added.

Major acetic acid producers in China include Celanese, BP, Shanghai Wujing and Yankuang Cathay Coal Chemicals.
