China's Xinjiang Huatai shuts PVC, caustic soda plants after fire

GUANGZHOU (ICIS)--China’s Xinjiang Huatai Heavy Chemical has shut down a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and a caustic soda plant at Urumqi following a fire on 25 July, its parent company Xinjiang Zhongtai Chemical said on Wednesday.

An explosion occurred in the late afternoon on Monday at the company’s acetylene facility, killing two workers and injuring another, according to a statement from Xinjiang Zhongtai.

The 360,000 tonne/year PVC plant and 300,000 tonne/year caustic soda plant are expected to be shut for one week before resuming operations, the statement said.

The company runs another 380,000 tonne/year PVC plant and 340,000 tonne/year caustic soda plant at the same site, according to its website.
