Taiwan’s Nan Ya suspends BDO offers after Mailiao pipeline fire

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Taiwanese producer Nan Ya Plastics has stopped all its offers for butanediol (BDO) following its declaration of force majeure on 1 August.

“We are checking [the volume of] our inventories. If [there are] no inventories, no offers [will be made] to anyone, even in Taiwan,” a company source said.

Nan Ya’s two lines at Hai Fong in Mailiao remain shut indefinitely, a company source said on Tuesday.

The No 1 BDO plant, which has a nameplate capacity of 40,000 tonnes/year, was taken off line on 5 May for a month-long maintenance. However, its shutdown was extended following a fire that broke out at the petrochemical complex production site on 12 May.  

The company was ordered by the local Yunlin county government to shut its 60,000 tonne/year No 2 BDO line at the same site on 13 June for further investigations.

The latest fire to break out at Formosa’s Mailiao petrochemical complex was on 30 July. Nan Ya is a subsidiary of the Formosa group.
