SHANGHAI (ICIS)--China’s Shanxi Coking Co has started building a 600,000 tonne/year methanol-to-olefins (MTO) project on 1 August, according to a company source on Wednesday.
The MTO project, which is located at Hongdong Industry Park in Shanxi province, is expected to start up in the second quarter of 2014, the source added.
“We will invest almost yuan (CNY) 8.6bn ($1.3bn) on the MTO project, which can produce 300,000 tonnes/year of polyethylene (PE) and 300,000 tonnes/year of polypropylene (PP),” said the source in Mandarin.
The company will use its own coal materials to produce methanol, then using methanol as feedstock of the MTO production, he added.
Shanxi Coking is a subsidiary of Shanxi Coking Coal Group.
