China’s Jiutai Energy shuts Erdos coal-based methanol plant

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Jiutai Energy shut its 1m tonne/year coal-based methanol plant at Erdos in northern Inner Mongolia early this week because of an unexpected outage, a company source said on Thursday.

The company shut the plant on 1 August and is expected to restart the plant by the end of this week.

Jiutai Energy supplies around 30,000 tonnes of the plant’s annual output to the company’s downstream 100,000 tonne/year methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) plant at the same site.

The remainder is sold to the northern China market, the source added.

MTBE prices in northern China increased by yuan (CNY) 50/tonne ($7.78/tonne) on 1 August to CNY2,200-2,600/tonne ex-tank, which is a possible reaction to the shutdown, market participants said.
