Japan’s shipments of foamed PS sheets rises by 4.1% in July

TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s shipments of foamed polystyrene (PS) sheets increased by 4.1% to 7,390 tonnes in July this year compared with the same period in 2010, based on official data released by the Japan Polystyrene Foamed Sheet Industry Association (JASFA) on Wednesday.

This is an 8.5% decrease from the previous month, according to the data.

The use of foamed PS sheets to produce food trays rose by 10% year on year to 3,550 tonnes, while those used to make laminated bowls fell by 2.1% to 1,910 tonnes, the data said.

A total of 1,600 tonnes of foamed PS sheets was used for general purposes, down by 1.2% year on year, the data added.

Japan’s production of PS in June increased by 14% to 60,949 tonnes from the same period in 2010, according to the Japan Styrene Industry Association (JSIA).

The demand for PS trays and bowls increased because of the earthquake and tsunami which hit northeast Japan on 11 March, an official from JSIA said.

JSIA will announce the statistics for Japan’s overall PS production and shipments for July later this month.
