China's petrochemical imports in July mixed on volatile markets

SHANGHAI (ICIS)--China's petrochemical imports for July were mixed, as some sectors saw increases while others fell as a result of fluctuations in international markets, industry sources said on Friday.

The import volume of naphtha was 171,797 tonnes in July, a decrease of 1% year on year but a fall of 9% month on month, according to data from the China Customs.

The country imported 86,894 tonnes of ethylene in July, an increase of 35% year on year and 1% month on month. China also imported 157,547 tonnes of propylene in July, an increase of 26% year on year and 62% month on month, the data showed (please see table below).

The increase in propylene imports is mainly because of the arrival of surplus cargoes from Saudi Arabia as a result of unplanned shutdowns of major downstream plants in Saudi Arabia in July, said one source from China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF).

China imported 20,351 tonnes of propylene from Saudi Arabia in July, but did not import any in June or last July, according to China Customs data.

The import volume of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) decreased by 32% year on year to 82,196 tonnes in July, the data showed.

China's monoethylene glycol (MEG) imports in July fell by 15% from June as the shutdown of Taiwan Nan Ya Plastics' plants after a fire on 12 May had affected its supply to the China market, an industry source said.
