SINGAPORE (ICIS)--LANXESS is planning to start commercial production of ethylene propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber made from bio-based raw materials at its plant at Triunfo in Brazil by the end of 2011, the German specialty chemicals firm said on Wednesday.

Brazilian polyethylene (PE) producer Braskem will supply bio-based ethylene, made by dehydrating ethanol from sugar cane, via a pipeline to the 40,000 tonne/year plant, LANXESS said in a statement.

The first few batches of LANXESS’ bio-based EPDM rubber, which is named Keltan Eco, will “amount to several hundred” tonnes, the company said without elaborating further.

The company’s other EPDM production sites are based at Geleen, in the Netherlands, Marl in Germany, and Texas, in the US.

EPDM is commonly used in the automotive industry as well as the plastics modification, cable and wire, construction and oil additives industries.
