TOKYO (ICIS)--Japanese shipments of foamed polystyrene (PS) sheet increased by 7% to 8,070 tonnes in September from the previous month, official data released by the Japan Polystyrene Foamed Sheet Industry Association (JASFA) showed on Friday.
This constitutes a 4.3% increase from the same period a year ago.
Shipments of PS sheet used in food trays stood at 3,610 tonnes, down by 3.2% from the previous month, and a 3.1% increase from the same period in 2010. Shipments used to produce laminated bowls rose by 26% to 2,830 tonnes from August – an increase of 7.6% from September 2010.
Laminated bowls are used as containers for instant noodles and other ready-made food products.
In total, 1,250 tonnes of PS sheet was used for general purposes – an increase of 3.3% year on year, according to JASFA.
Japan’s overall production of PS in August was 45,416 tonnes – a 20% decrease from August 2010, according to the Japan Styrene Industry Association.
The association is to announce statistics for September later this month.
