LONDON (ICIS)--LANXESS has agreed a joint-development deal with US-based renewable chemicals company BioAmber to develop succinic acid-based plasticisers, the German chemical producer said on Thursday.

BioAmber has a succinic acid plant in France with a 3,000 tonne/year capacity. Under the terms of the agreement, BioAmber expects to increase production by 17,000 tonnes in 2013 at a new facility in Sarnia, Canada, on a site within LANXESS’ industrial Park.

LANXESS said the global market for phthalate-free plasticizers is estimated at €1.3bn ($1.8bn), with annual growth of around 7%.

“BioAmber’s biobased succinic acid is a unique opportunity to develop a new generation of plasticizers combining full regulatory compliance with superior environmental background,” LANXESS’ head of functional chemicals, Jorge Nogueira, said.

LANXESS and BioAmber have worked together for more than two years assessing the performance and opportunities of succinate-based esters in the plasticiser market.

“Our partnership with LANXESS will accelerate penetration of the global plasticizer market and secure a first mover advantage for both companies,” BioAmber CEO Jean-Francois Huc said.

“BioAmber’s succinic acid offers a safe, sustainable alternative to phthalates and our additional plants in Sarnia and Thailand will ensure our customers have reliable, competitive supply,” he added.

The two companies expect to begin production in 2012.
