Braskem mulls greenfield PVC plant in Brazil – exec

BUENOS AIRES (ICIS)--Brazil-based petrochemical giant Braskem is exploring the construction of a greenfield polyvinyl chloride (PVC) facility in the country, a senior executive said on Friday.

“We are undergoing a PVC capacity expansion in Brazil, but we believe there is room for another new facility many years from now,” said Rui Chammas, executive vice president, polymers, at the 2011 Petrochemical Seminar organised by US-based Polyolefins Consulting.

“We have not decided on the size and timing, but our mission is to offer continuous supply to the Brazilian market. We will need to match PVC demand growth for infrastructure projects, such as in water and sewage,” he added.

Chammas would not offer details on the exact location of the new PVC plant.

Braskem is expanding PVC production at its site in Alagoas, Brazil, by 200,000 tonnes/year, to total 460,000 tonnes, by May 2012.
