US Sept LDPE exports gained 16% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US low-density polyethylene (LDPE) exports for September were up by 16% from the same month a year ago, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Thursday.

Exports of LDPE increased to 60,262 tonnes from 52,109 tonnes in September 2010.

Exports of LDPE to Canada accounted for 14,141 tonnes, with Mexico accounting for 12,040 tonnes, and China taking 6,039 tonnes.

Year-to-date export activity for LDPE fell by 6 percent to 471,795 tonnes in 2011 from 502,714 tonnes in 2010.

US linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) exports fell by 13% year on year in September 2011 to 53,078 tonnes from 60,911 tonnes in 2010, according to the ITC.

Canada, China and Mexico purchased a little less than half of the LLDPE exported from the US. China nearly doubled its purchases to 4,965 tonnes in 2011 from 2,597 tonnes in 2010.

US high-density polyethylene (HDPE) exports fell by less than a percentage point year on year in September to 138,142 tonnes from 138,187 tonnes in September 2010.

Mexico, Canada and Brazil were the top destinations for US HDPE material.

Major US PE producers include Chevron Phillips Chemical, LyondellBasell, Dow Chemical, ExxonMobil, Westlake, INEOS, Total, Nova Chemicals and Formosa.
