China’s Jiangsu Leasty Chemical shuts Jiangyin SM unit on 20 Nov

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Jiangsu Leasty Chemical shut its 400,000 tonne/year styrene monomer (SM) unit in Jiangyin on 20 November for maintenance, a company source said on Monday.

“The unit is expected to restart [in a month’s time], so we have cancelled our contracts for December,” the source said.

“The downstream 240,000 tonne/year expandable polystyrene (EPS) unit at the same location will be run normally,” the source added.

“However, the demand from end-users is weak so the operating rate at the EPS unit is just around 50% capacity,” the source said.

Jiangsu Leasty Chemical is the third biggest SM producer in east China.

The largest producer of the product is Shanghai SECCO Petrochemical with a capacity of 650,000 tonnes/year, followed by Zhenhai Lyondell Chemicals, with a capacity of 620,000 tonnes/year.
