LONDON (ICIS)--WR Grace has completed the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Sorocaba, Brazil, the US-based specialty chemicals company said on Monday.

The expansion enables WR Grace to increase production of silica gel for the renewable fuels industry, particularly for biodiesel and renewable diesel, as well as other consumer and industrial applications, it added.

Financial details of the expansion were not disclosed in the company’s statement.

“This expansion represents a significant investment in Latin America as part of our strategy to strengthen our presence in emerging regions,” said Greg Poling, president and chief operating officer of WR Grace.

“With this additional capacity, we are positioned to provide even more resources for our local and regional customers,” he added.

The Sorocaba site began silica production in 1984 and is currently Grace’s largest facility in Latin America, producing more than 50 grades of silica, which are used for applications such as paints, plastics, beer and other beverages, pharmaceuticals and edible oils, the company said.
