SAO PAULO (ICIS)--Brazil's coating industry may produce 1.4bn litres of paints in 2011, becoming the world’s fourth largest paint producer, Antonio Carlos de Oliveira, the president of Associacao Brasileira dos Fabricantes de Tintas (Abrafati), said on Monday.
The consumption per capita of paints should also increase from 7.5 litres (1.65 gal) to 20 litres by 2020, said Oliveira.
Brazil’s growing middle class and the expansion of the construction industry are fuelling the increase in paint consumption, he said.
There may be 23m homes built in Brazil by 2022, Oliveira added.
The automotive sector has also contributed to the spike in paint consumption.
Additionally, the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Olympic Games will add to domestic demand for paints.
Oliveira said only China, the US and Germany produce more paint than Brazil.
