However, this was a 13% decrease from the corresponding period a year earlier, according to the Japan Styrene Industry Association (JSIA).
Exports increased by 11% month on month, but fell by 15% year on year, to 1,993 tonnes, the data showed.
A total of 7,956 tonnes of PS were used for electrical and industrial purposes in October 2011, down by 27% from the same time a year earlier, according to JSIA.
Meanwhile, the country produced 206,304 tonnes of styrene monomer (SM) in October, up by 5% from the previous month but down by 21% year on year, the data showed.
Exports of SM in October fell by 21% month on month to 88,077 tonnes, a decline of 38% year on year, according to the association.
