Fresh sanctions have been imposed on IranSINGAPORE (ICIS)--Iranian polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) plant projects will be delayed because of a lack of equipment and technology as a result of US sanctions, industry players said on Tuesday.

The start-up dates of new PE and PP facilities (see table below) in Iran will be postponed until at least the second half of 2012, they added.

“Many of these projects are licensed by US companies and in the presence of the US sanctions, it remains questionable whether the plants will eventually start up,” said a source close to producer Petrochemical Commercial Co (PCC).

A Chinese importer said: “Not just the technology will not be passed on to the Iranians, the availability of raw materials may be a rising problem that the new and existing polymer plants have to face.”

A key importer based in eastern China said: “More technical hiccups are expected following this news, curtailing the Iranian supply.”

Several Iranian players said in the event that Iran becomes really isolated and is prevented from trading with the rest of the world, and eventually the new plants start up, new products will be more inclined to cater for the domestic market because of the locations of plants away from the sea.
