Germany firm to build water chems plant at Dormagen chem site

LONDON (ICIS)--German chemicals firm FERRO DUO plans to build a plant for the production of water treatment chemicals at the Dormagen chemicals site near Cologne, Germany, officials said on Tuesday.

FERRO DUO’s plant will produce iron and aluminium salts, which are chemicals used in the treatment of water, it said in documents filed with a regulatory authority in Cologne.

Construction of the plant is expected to begin next year, subject to regulatory approval.

The plant would source hydrochloric acid from Bayer MaterialScience and it would be integrated into the chemical production complex at Dormagen, FERRO DUO said.

Duisburg-based FERRO DUO did not disclose the project's capacity or how much money it plans to invest.

Other projects planned for Dormagen include Bayer MaterialScience’s 300,000 tonne/year toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) facility, and a water chemicals project by Finland's Kermia.

Kemira's project would also use hydrochloric acid from Bayer as a raw material.

Hydrochloric acid is a by-product from Bayer’s TDI production process at Dormagen. Bayer's planned TDI project would replace the company's existing 90,000 tonne/year TDI production capacity at Dormagen.
