Vinyl Chloride Malaysia shuts VCM, PVC units at Kerteh

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Vinyl Chloride Malaysia shut its 400,000 tonne/year vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plant at Kerteh in Terengganu early this week because of a technical problem, a source close to the company said on Friday.

Its downstream 150,000 tonne/year polyvinyl chloride (PVC) facility at the same site was also shut because of a lack of feedstock VCM, the source added.

Both plants are expected to resume operations in December although the actual restart dates remain unclear, according to the source.

The producer is unable to offer VCM and PVC cargoes during the shutdown and this is likely to exacerbate the tight supply situation, market sources said.

The company, also known as VCM SB, is a subsidiary of Malaysia’s state-owned PETRONAS.
