Brazil October chemical sales fall 6.79% year on year

SAO PAULO (ICIS)--Brazil's domestic sales of industrial chemicals in October dropped by 6.79% year on year, partially because of weaker demand for chemical products in the period, chemical industry association Abiquim said on Monday.

Products with less demand included thermoplastic resins, detergents and basic petrochemicals, the association added.

Compared with September, Brazil’s domestic sales in October fell 7.91% on a weaker local demand.  

In the first 10 months of the year, domestic sales fell by 3.49% year on year as chemical imports continued to increase, Abiquim said.   

Domestic production of industrial chemicals in October dropped by 5.83% year on year and by 0.16% month on month, according to Abiquim.  

In the January-October period, output fell by 3.99% year on year.

Brazil’s chemical industry ran at an average of 81% of capacity in January-October, compared with 84% of capacity in the same period of 2010, Abiquim said. 

In the first 10 months of 2011, domestic prices of chemicals increased by 15.27% year on year.

In October from September, prices increased by 3.50%, Abiquim added.
