HOUSTON (ICIS)--FMC will start producing potash at its lithium site in Salta, Argentina, next year, the US chemicals firm said on Tuesday.

The potash production, which will be for use in agricultural markets, is part of FMC’s 30% expansion of lithium capacity at Salta, due to come on line in 2012, the company said.

FMC said its potash output at Salta would continue to increase in line with its lithium expansions there. It did not specify how much potash, in terms of tonnes/year, it expects to produce at Salta.

In addition to the 30% lithium expansion, FMC is evaluating doubling its lithium capacity at Salta.

FMC cites its lithium capacity in terms of total lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). On that basis, FMC’s capacity at Salta is currently about 17,000 tonnes/year.
