Canada chemical industry welcomes ease of cross-border trade with US

TORONTO (ICIS)--Canada’s chemical industry welcomes a plan to ease cross-border trade with the US to strengthen the Canadian chemicals manufacturing industry, a trade group said in a statement on Wednesday.

Ottawa-based Chemistry Industry Association of Canada said the plan, which was announced by US President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on 8 December, should help to reduce clearance delays and regulatory duplication, “both of which can be very costly for the industry.”

“Canada’s chemistry industry sends 76% of its exports – more than Canadian dollar (C$) 20bn ($20bn) worth of products – to the US every year,” said the association’s president and CEO, Richard Paton.

“The measures outlined in the Border Action Plans are critical to keeping our industry competitive and to strengthen Canada’s manufacturing sector,” Paton added.
