Thailand’s PTT Chemical shuts No 1 cracker on mechanical issue

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Thailand’s PTT Chemical shut its 515,000 tonne/year No 1 cracker at Map Ta Phut late on 7 December because of problems with its quench tower, a company source said on Thursday.

The cracker was operating at 85% capacity before the outage and the duration of the shutdown has not been finalised, according to the source.

The source added that the outage does not have a big impact on the southeast Asian market because the company was looking to sell some ethylene cargoes before the outage.

PTT also operates three other gas-based crackers at the site which have a combined ethylene nameplate capacity of 1.86m tonnes/year. These crackers are still running normally, the source added.
