DUBAI (ICIS)--Chevron Phillips Chemical will add 1m tonnes/year of polyethylene (PE) capacity in the US, chief executive Peter Cella said on Wednesday, as he announced that the company would move ahead with plans to build an ethane cracker in Texas.

“We will build two PE units of 500,000 tonnes/year,” Cella said on the sidelines of the 6th Annual GPCA (Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association) conference.

The company was still evaluating the sites for the PE units, he said.

The PE plants could either be located in Cedar Bayou – the location of the new cracker – or at Chevron Phillips' Sweeny complex, also in Texas.

Cella said the permits for the new 1.5m tonne/year cracker would be filed on Wednesday.
