Three Chinese firms to start up joint coal-based MEG plant in 2012

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Wuhan Engineering, Haiso Technology, and Hebi Baoma Group will jointly start up a 250,000 tonne/year coal-based monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant in the second half of 2012, a source from Hebi Baoma Group said on Friday.

The plant is located at Hebi in Henan province and construction was started on 26 January 2010, according to the source.

The companies, which invested yuan (CNY) 2bn ($313m) in the project, conducted a successful test run at a 50,000 tonne/year MEG plant at the same site on 1 July 2011, the source said.

The project, which can use coal as feedstock, will help to ease a domestic oil shortage and reduce the country’s dependence on imported MEG, the source said
