US lawmakers propose funding for review of styrene cancer warning

HOUSTON (ICIS)--The US Congress has proposed funding a scientific review of styrene's listing as an anticipated carcinogen, a trade group said on Friday.

Under the proposal, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) will conduct a scientific, peer review of styrene's listing as an anticipated carcinogen, according to the Styrene Information and Research Center (SIRC), a trade group.

Styrene was listed as an anticipated carcinogen in the 12th Report on Carcinogens (RoC), issued by the National Toxicology Program (NTP).

The National Academy of Sciences is a taxpayer-funded agency that advises the US government on science and technical issues, and its findings typically influence Congress.

The NAS review was included by Congress in its Congressional Conference Report on Appropriations for 2012.

The styrene group is also trying to overturn the anticipated-carcinogen listing in a lawsuit it filed against the US Department of Health and Human Services, the parent agency of the National Toxicology Program.

The lawsuit is pending in US District Court, District of Columbia.
