China approves joint venture coalbed methane project in Panzhuang

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has approved a coalbed methane project at Panzhuang in Shanxi province, a joint venture between China United Coalbed Methane and Asian American Gas, the latter company said in a statement on Monday.

The output from the project’s pilot wells currently averages about 100m cubic metres (cbm)/year and is expected to reach 500m cbm/year by 2013, according to the statement on the company’s website.

China United Coalbed Methane and Asian American Gas each hold a 50% stake in the project, Asian American Gas said.

The project will be the first Sino-foreign cooperative commercial coalbed methane project in China, the statement said.
