China’s Jiaxing Petrochemical to start up PTA unit in Q2 2012

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Jiaxing Petrochemical, a subsidiary of Tongkun Group, plans to start up its 1.5m tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant at Jiaxing in Zhejiang province in the second quarter of 2012, a source from Tongkun Group said on Thursday.

“We are in the phase of equipment installation now and will complete project construction around April next year,” the source said.

The start-up could be delayed as the company has yet to obtain the qualification certificate for port construction that could take several months, a source close to the company said.

The new plant’s PTA production is only for captive use, the company source said.

Financial details of the project were not immediately available.

Tongkun Group, the fifth-largest polyester manufacturer in China, has a total polyester yarn capacity of 1.5m tonnes/year at Tongxiang in Zhejiang province. PTA is a key feedstock for polyester production.

Tongkun Group plans to add two polyester yarn lines at Tongxiang and Huzhou, respectively, in Zhejiang province at the end of 2012 or in early 2013. Each line will have a capacity of 400,000 tonnes/year, which will boost the company’s total polyester capacity to 2.3m tonnes/year.

The top four Chinese polyester makers by capacity in 2011 are Jiangsu Sanfangxiang Group, Zhejiang Hengyi Petrochemical, Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fibre and Hengli Group.
