LONDON (ICIS)--Chemicals supplier Brenntag has clarified its role in the supply of silicone oils to the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), which is at the centre of a breast implants scandal, the Germany-based company said on Tuesday.

The French government has advised 30,000 women in France who bought PIP implants, made from an industrial-strength silicone intended for electrical use, mattresses or the agriculture industry, to have them removed because of concerns that they might rupture. The governments of the UK, Brazil and a few other countries have requested women to arrange checks with their doctors.

“The silicone oils delivered by Brenntag are standard products for many different applications and are intended to be used in industrial applications including the Personal Care industry. The products are not for use in breast implants,” Brenntag said in a statement.

“In line with our process standards Brenntag customers are provided with safety data sheets and specifications on all necessary information. We confirmed in our order acknowledgements the exclusive industrial use of the products (including Personal Care). Furthermore Brenntag advises customers to verify if the delivered products are suitable and appropriate to the customer’s product requirements,” it added.

Brenntag said in its statement that in April 2010 it had fully answered inquiries from the French Agency for the Safety of Health Products (Afssaps).

“Since then there have been no further inquiries. Should we be required, Brenntag is committed to provide all necessary information to the authorities. Brenntag is clearly aware and deeply concerned about the recent developments and continues to provide any possible support in this matter,” it added.
