South Korea’s KKPC to shut 70,000 tonne/year SBS unit in Jan

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s Kumho Petrochemical Co (KKPC) plans to shut down its 70,000 tonne/year styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) plant at Yeosu in the first half of January, a company source said on Friday.

The shutdown is prompted mainly by the rapidly rising price of feedstock butadiene (BD) since 2011 and weak demand from the downstream sector, the source added.

Demand from local downstream industries, such as road construction and shoe manufacturing, is weak because of a tighter macroeconomic environment and limited exports.

The company plans to restart the plant in March, the source added.
