LONDON (ICIS)--Ashland plans to expand production of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) at its manufacturing facility in Texas City, Texas, in response to strong demand from the pharmaceutical and beverage industries, the US-based producer said on Monday.

The company plans to complete the addition of a new PVP production unit at the site by late 2013, it added.

Ashland currently has two PVP manufacturing units in Calvert City, Kentucky, and one located in Texas City, making the synthetic polymers.

"Ashland is committed to having sufficient manufacturing capacity available to help our customers capitalise on future growth opportunities," said John Panichella, president of Ashland Specialty Ingredients.

"Over the next few years, Ashland expects steady growth [in PVP] driven by an industry need for formulation ingredients that improve the dissolution of poorly soluble drugs, and growth in emerging markets generated by increased demand for generic drug products and consumer demographics,” said Jeff Wolff, group vice-president of pharmaceutical and nutrition specialties at Ashland Specialty Ingredients.

No financial or capacity figures were disclosed.
