HOUSTON (ICIS)--US November exports of chlorinated solvents increased by 80% year on year according to data released on Friday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Combined exports of methylene chloride, perchloroethylene (perc) and trichloroethylene (TCE) were 21,754 tonnes in November 2011, up from 12,115 tonnes for the same month in 2010.

The biggest surge came from methylene chloride exports. November 2011 exports were 17,503 tonnes, almost tripled from 5,864 tonnes a year ago.

Month on month, total chlorinated solvent exports nearly tripled, from 7,314 tonnes in October 2011.

The biggest reason for the surge in exports was global tightness in the chlorinated solvent market, as well as demand being stable for the production of refrigerant liquids.

Total November imports of chlorinated solvents were down by 54%, to 3,003 tonnes in 2011 from 6,529 tonnes for the same month in 2010.

Month on month, imports fell by 50% from 6,047 tonnes in October 2011.

Major US sellers of the chlorinated solvents include Dow Chemical, INEOS Chlor, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) and PPG Industries.
