US acetic acid exports drop 36% in November year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US acetic acid exports in November 2011 dropped by 36% to 62,309 tonnes from 97,317 tonnes in November 2010, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.

Belgium, usually the largest export destination, dropped to the second largest in November, accounting for all of the decline and then some, taking less than one-third of the shipments it received a year earlier.

Acetic acid shipments to Belgium totaled 18,649 tonnes during November, compared with 59,626 tonnes in the same month of 2010.

Mexico took over the top spot, receiving 29,769 tonnes in November, more than doubling its take in the same month of 2010, when acetic acid exports to the country totaled 14,258 tonnes.

Brazil rounded out the top three export destinations for US acetic, at 7,568 tonnes. Brazil, Mexico and Belgium  received a total of 55,986 tonnes in November, down by almost 33% from 82,969 tonnes in November 2010.

Major US acetic acid sellers include BP, Celanese and Eastman Chemical.
