HOUSTON (ICIS)--BASF Fina Petrochemical has awarded a contract for the construction of an ethylene furnace at its Port Arthur cracker in Texas to Selas Fluid, a subsidiary of The Linde Group, Selas said on Thursday.

The furnace will have the flexibility to crack ethane, naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) feedstock.

Selas will be responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of the furnace, as well as its integration into the existing plant.

Selas said projects like these typically take about two years to complete. The cost of the project was not disclosed.

The Port Arthur cracker has an ethylene capacity of 934,000 tonnes/year, according to ICIS plants and projects.

The companies did not say by how much capacity would increase as a result of the new furnace.

BASF Fina Petrochemical is a joint venture between BASF and Total Petrochemical. Neither company immediately returned calls seeking comment.
