PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (ICIS)--Brazil has become a hub of bioplastics production, a consultant with Uniao da Industria de Cana-de-acucar (UNICA) said on Tuesday.

“Within Latin America, Brazil, which has one of the most clean [energy] bases in the planet, was a pioneer in the commercialisation of bioplastic-made packages,” said Alfred Szwarc, UNICA's Emissions and Technology consultant.

Sugar-based ethanol production in Brazil will also help expand the country's bioplastics sector, Szwarc added.

The company said bioplastics add value to goods, saying more and more consumers are looking for sustainable products.

UNICA has formed strategic partnerships to further the growth of the bioplastics industry.

For example, UNICA recently partnered with Tetra Pak to expand the supply of polyethylene (PE) caps.
