Brazil January caustic soda consumption rises 9.4% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 225,618 dry metric tons (dmt) of liquid caustic soda in January 2012, up by 9.4% from the 206,313 dmt consumed during the same period in 2011, the country’s association of chloralkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Monday.

Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda in January of 2012 was 120,359 dmt, 8% higher than the 111,434 dmt produced during the same period in 2011, Abiclor said.

Liquid caustic soda imports were 108,760 dmt in January 2012, up by 11% from 97,974 dmt imported in 2011. The US was Brazil’s principal source with 150,237 dmt exported there this year, corresponding to 77.1% share of imports into Brazil.

Demand from all caustic soda consuming sectors in Brazil is healthy.

Major markets consuming liquid caustic soda in Brazil in 2012 are paper and cellulose with 26,749 dmt, up by 10.3% from January 2011, chemical/petrochemical with 19,838 dmt, up by 7.6%, and metallurgy with 15,553 dmt, up by 12.3%.

Caustic soda producers in Brazil are Braskem, Carbocloro and Dow Brasil.
