Cellulose-to-sugar plant planned for South Korea

HOUSTON (ICIS)--A subsidiary of BlueFire Renewables signed an agreement with South Korea-based GS Caltex to build a plant that will produce sugar from cellulose, the US-based company said on Tuesday.

The plant will process 2 tons/day of construction and demolition debris, said the subsidiary, SucreSource. GS Caltex will then use the resulting feedstock to produce chemicals.

SucreSource did not specify what chemicals GS Caltex would produce.

Under the deal, GS Caltex will own and operate the plant, and SucreSource will provide the process design package, the equipment procurement and the technical and engineering support.

SucreSource said it could then work with GS Caltex to build larger plants in South Korea and other parts of the world.
