Japan's January ABS domestic shipments up 2% month on month

TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s domestic shipments of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin rose 2% month on month to 20,379 tonnes in January this year, partly buoyed by higher demand from the automotive industry, statistics from an industry association showed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the country’s domestic shipments fell by 6% from the corresponding period a year earlier, according to official data from the Nihon ABS jushi kogyokai, Japan's ABS resin industry association.

Japan’s exports of ABS resin rose by 2% month on month to 9,829 tonnes in January, but fell by 24% from the same month a year earlier, the data showed.

Among domestic shipments, 8,219 tonnes of ABS resin were used for automotive applications in January, up 5% month on month and an 8% increase on a year-on-year basis, according to the association.

Domestic shipments of ABS resin for electric appliances fell by 2% to 2,240 tonnes in January from December last year and decreased by 26% from the corresponding period a year earlier, it added.
