Canada’s Methanex to restart second New Zealand plant by 1 July

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Canada’s Methanex is planning to restart its methanol plant at Motunui in New Zealand by 1 July this year, a company source sad on Thursday.

Earlier in January, the company said that it plans to restart the plant by the middle of this year as it will have enough feedstock to run the facility that had been idled since 2004.

Methanex has signed a 10-year deal with New Zealand-based Todd Energy for the supply of feedstock natural gas, Methanex said in a statement on 17 January.

The plant has an actual nameplate capacity of 850,000 tonnes/year but can only produce 650,000 tonnes/year by the time it restarts.

Out of the three methanol facilities that Methanex has in New Zealand, only one with an 850,000 tonne/year capacity at Motunui is currently running because of feedstock shortage.
