SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Zhejiang Wankai New Materials Co is to start up a new 400,000 tonnes/year polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plant at Haining in Zhejiang province towards the end of the month, a company source said on Friday.

“Trial run has already started and on-spec material is expected latest by 10 March,” the source added in Mandarin.

Zhejiang Wankai New Materials Co has an existing 250,000 tonne/year plant at the same site and with the addition of the new plant the company's total PET capacity will increase to 650,000 tonnes/year.

Capacity expansions by producers including Zhejiang Wankai, China Resources and Thailand-based Indorama Ventures Ltd (IVL) will lift the nation’s nameplate bottle chip capacity to 6.5m tonnes/year in 2012, from 4.9m tonnes/year in 2011.
