Belarus’s Mogilevkhimvolokno plans increased PET capacity

MOSCOW (ICIS)--Mogilevkhimvolokno plans to increase its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) capacity by up to 240,000 tonnes/year, the Belarusian polyester fibres producer said on Friday.

The expansion project is expected to be completed in 2015 at an estimated cost of $150m (€114m), it said.

Mogilevkhimvolokno, based in the Mogilev region of eastern Belarus, currently produces 115,000 tonnes/year of PET. It also produces dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and polyester fibres.

In December 2010, the government of Belarus approved Mogilevkhimvolokno’s development programme for the years up to 2015, which envisaged increasing PET capacity by up to 200,000 tonnes/year.

In 2005, Mogilevkhimvolokno announced plans to build a new 400,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) unit by 2009.

But in 2008, the company revised its PTA plans down to 220,000 tonnes/year.

However, the PTA project has remained slow to materialise. It is understood the company struggled to finance the project.
