Amoco Mitsui Indonesia’s PTA plant shut since 17 Feb, FM declared

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Amoco Mitsui Indonesia’s 460,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant at Merak has been down for a week now because of mechanical problems, a company source said on Thursday.

The company has declared a force majeure on supply from the plant following the shutdown on 17 February, the source said.

“We are having repair works and it is difficult to get specific timing for the restart,” the source said.

The company has depleted its own inventory and is trying to get support from its joint venture companies in order to provide supply to contract customers, he added.

AMI’s Merak plant is a joint venture between BP and Mitsui Chemicals.

Indonesia’s PTA supply is currently tight given shutdowns at two major plants, including Mitsubishi Chemicals’ 330,000 tonne/year No 2 PTA unit at Merak that will only resume production by the end of the month.
