China's CNOOC to start up Hainan SM plant in the middle of 2013

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) plans to start up its 100,000 tonne/year styrene monomer (SM) plant at Hainan in southern China in the middle of 2013, a source from the Chinese company said on Thursday.

Construction on the plant began at the end of 2010, the source said.

The plant, which will be operated by a wholly owned subsidiary of CNOOC, will use the dry-gas process for SM production and feedstock will supplied by the company’s upstream units.

The company has no plan to construct downstream plants and all SM output will be supplied to the market, possibly to the southern China market, the source added.

The SM plant is part of CNOOC’s petrochemical project in Hainan that is under construction, according to an earlier report from ICIS.
